Abstract: This is a map created to share the geolocations (latitudes and longitudes) for neighborhoods in 17th century Istanbul. I created this using Müller-Wiener's invaluable Bildlexikon zur Topographie Istanbuls, Ayverdi's Fatih Devri sonlarında Istanbul Mahalleleri, Kafescioğlu's Constantinopolis/Istanbul, and, as a last resort, Pervititch maps and Google Maps. The point is usually at the neighborhood's eponymous mosque or other monument. The neighborhoods shown are those mentioned in a sample of ~900 terekeler (probate inventories) drawn from the middle of the 17th century. This is still a work in progress. I welcome suggestions. I'm sharing this dataset because I found it very time-consuming to make, so I wanted others to be able to use it rather than having to repeat the work! Data Quality Statement: The associated data indicate the source for most of the data points (this is my working table, so it has not been completely polished). The best data come from Müller-Wiener and Ayverdi. In some cases, I referred to Pervetitch maps or to the neighborhood's current location in Google Maps. I feel least confident in the latter locations. I welcome suggestions for improving this dataset.
